SEW INTO SCHOOLS
The Sew Into Schools pilot program provides students at Redding School of the Arts (RSA) with project-based learning in sewing and costume design. Sewing is one of the world's oldest art forms - a fundamental process of creation.
Where would Nick Cave be without sewing?
Our long term goal is to integrate this model into Shasta County schools in order to activate
the arts and culture for all communities, beginning with our youth.

Fairy Tale Character Costume Design
Students were given the fairy tale character Little Red Riding Hood and asked to design a new costume for the character that expresses random characteristics. This lesson works with the first half of a costumes function; defining a character. Attributes came from 4 of the 5 basic roles in defining a character; establishing age, rank, personality, and time and/or space. Masculine and feminine croquis were provided along with pencils and coloured pencils. Students were given an hour to create their designs. 20 minutes were given to discuss designs and ask questions. The last 10 minutes the students designed quick and bold designs for a matching Big Bad Wolf. |
Regalia
Supported by the Redding Rancheria
Native American Culture Collection Courses from Redding Fashion Alliance are designed to combine the skill of patternmaking and sewing with the historic designs of Native American regalia. The Rancheria and its rich cultural community knows the history of the indigenous community, whose sacred prints, hand-burnished leatherwork, and beaded appliqués have been imitated by fashion houses for centuries. The colorful regalia that is part of the rich ceremonial artistry experienced at a contemporary Native American Pow Wow will not only teach valuable techniques but give cultural lessons to all who attend. Young designers will create a modern day capsule collection inspired by ceremonial events.
